{\noindent Dear Caroline:}

I do not know enough about robotic control devices to comment on these
products.

I do know something about word processors. I could not tell from Jane's
letter whether the word processor that she was using is
one of their products or not. If it
is, I wonder if Jane and David know how stiff the competition is in this
field. To give you some idea, I am writing this letter using \TEX, a text
processing language that is being worked on here at Stanford.

This system is very versatile.
For example, \TEX\ has available a large number of different fonts.
Fonts are usually grouped into families \\tenpoint (that you are now
reading), \\ninepoint {\ninepoint (smaller)}, and \\eightpoint
{\eightpoint (still smaller)}.
Each family contains several kinds of type, specified by simple control
sequences, \ \\rm ({\rm for roman}), \ \\it ({\it
for italics\/}), \ \\sl ({\sl for slanted\/}), \ \\bf ({\bf for bold-face}),
 \ \\tt ({\tt for typewriter}), \ \\caps ({\caps for CAPS and small caps}),
 and \ \\sy ({\sy for Symbols}) {\tinyfnt (that says ``for Symbols'' in sy)}.
\ Having made a family
selection one need only type \ \\it \ {\it to change to italics}.

I could go on but perhaps I should enclose a few pages from a beginners
manual that I am currently writing and that is, of
course, written using \TEX.

Lest I mislead you, this letter and this report are written on a very
large computer. However, work is under way to adapt \TEX\ for use on very much
smaller machines, machines of the home computer type and when this has been
done, output quality similiar to this will be available in the home.
